Good morning Kahunas,
I had a very interesting day yesterday. I went to Amish Country. I stayed in a campground in the town of Sugarcreek. This little town is filled with Swiss and Amish people. In Switzerland where a lot of these people come from they make a lot of cheese. The kind they make the most is Swiss Cheese. It has gas bubbles in it that makes holes in the cheese. I found a train with a big piece of cheese on it. It was fun to play on. Amish people live a little differently than we do. They do not use electricity in their homes. The girls and women always cover their hair with little hats, and wear only dresses. When the boys grow up, they grow beards and they don't use many mechanical things. They don't drive cars either. It was funny to see the ladies shopping and then putting their groceries in the back of their wagons. If you were going to school in Sugarcreek you would walk to school, ride a bike or use a horse. I walked around the town and found 2 more brick murals. One was of the artist that made them and who painted many murals in the town. I found the giant coo coo clock. When I first saw it there was just a swiss girl in front of it. Then music began to play and the side doors opened and out came musicians. One of the men kept lifting his hat whenever the girl danced by.
I found a garden with lots of little fairies and gnomes. That is another word with a silent letter.
I found another museum that told lot about the Swiss and Amish people. I saw their kitchen. There was another wood burning stove, and a pump for water. They used oil lamps or candles. I saw the clothes hanging on the wall. The men always wear black suits and white shirts. I climbed into a big cheese pot. I saw a printing press. The children did not all have books long ago so the teacher had big hanging books to teach them with. I played on an ice cream truck, in a car sign, and in an old buggy. I found a bean pot that was put in the fireplace to cook in. Did you see the row of desks? What do you think the row of red seats with footrests was for? Do you think you could carry that music maker around? The big Alp horn was really loud. In Switzerland you could hear it across the valleys and mountains. There were no telephones so they could play the horns to send messages. I liked the typewriter and bicycle but my legs were not long enough to ride it.
I went to a Amish Church and store and saw a doll dressed like an Amish girl. There was a picture of boys and girls going to school. Then I went to a cheese factory. Do you remember I had to wear a hair net when I went to the Candy factory? These Amish men had to wear beard nets. I think that was silly. I bought some cheese from an Amish girl. She talked to me a lot. I watched some men working in the fields. They do not use tractors. They use horses. It seemed strange to see horses and buggies driving down the road next to Cmor. In the parking lots they are parked near all the cars.
Next I went to the Longaberger Homestead. This is a big barn and factory where they make baskets and sell them all over the world. I found a big basket and climbed in. It was the biggest basket I ever saw. It looked like a flag. Then I was walking around and saw an even bigger basket. I could not believe how big the apples were. If I could bring one to your school, everyone in you whole school could have a bite and there would be enough left over to make a few pies.
Inside the store was a flag made of lots of baskets. Then Cmor took me for a little drive and what do you think we saw? We saw a building that was 7 stories tall. It really was the biggest basket in the whole world. If you could change the shape of your school, what shape would you like it to be? Well I am off to new adventures. I will write latter. Hugs from Junior
